Prelaminated Panels

KYDEX® Prelaminated Panels are uniquely different from other prelaminated panels because they have a KYDEX® surface. Since 1965, KYDEX® sheet has been used by hospitals, airports, hotels, schools, retail stores, etc. as a protective surfacing for walls
and doors in high traffic and abuse areas (reference Sweet's Catalog File Section 09985/NUD). KYDEX® surfacing is an extremely durable, chemical resistant, fire-rated laminate that is highly resistant to impact, abrasion, stains, scuffs, chipping and cracking.
KYDEX
® Prelaminated Panels are comprised of KYDEX® protective surfacing, factory bonded to common substrates, including 3/8" fire-rated particleboard and 3/8" Oriented Strand Board (OSB waferboard). Color matched moldings are also available.
Basic Use: Ideal for most vertical applications and many horizontal applications. May be used on counters, store fixtures, displays, cabinetry, hospital and medical case goods and many applications where high-pressure laminates would typically be used. KYDEX
® Prelaminated Panels can also be used in environmentally controlled building interiors as wall protection in areas subject to high traffic and abuse. Panels can also be provided with KYDEX® surfacing on both sides and used as partitions.

Application Limitations:
- KYDEX
® Prelaminated Panels should be specified for interior use only.
- KYDEX
® Prelaminated Panels are not recommended for applications where temperature may exceed 100ºF (38ºC).
- KYDEX
® Prelaminated Panels are not recommended for horizontal surfaces where hot items may be placed, such as kitchen countertops and fast food franchise checkout counters.
- KYDEX
® Prelaminated Panels are not recommended for use in high moisture areas or in standing water, for edge swelling and moisture absorption by substrate will occur.
Applicable Standards: KYDEX
® Surface - Surface burning characteristics (flame spread and smoke developed) are classified by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. and meet or exceed Class I/A fire code requirements.
Fire-Rated Particleboard Substrate - Surface burning characteristics (flame spread and smoke developed) are classified by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. and meet and exceed Class I/A fire code requirements.
Food Status: KYDEX
® Prelaminated Panels have a USDA accepted surface in Polar White #62000 and Beige #72005.
Composition and Materials: KYDEX
® surfacing is .028" thick and is a semi-rigid, fire-retardant acrylic-PVC Alloy thermoplastic sheet material. Color is integral throughout the surface so minor scratches are inconspicuous. Texture and gloss are permanently embossed as the sheet is manufactured, not in a secondary lamination.
Fire-rated particleboard substrate is made from Western softwood particles and highly effective fire retardant chemicals bonded with special formulas of resins and waxes. Oriented Strand Board (OSB waferboard) substrate is made by thermo bonding aspen wafers with exterior phenolic resins under extreme heat and pressure.
Standard Panel Sizes (3/8" Substrate): 4' x 8', 4' x 9', 4' x 10'
Standard Colors: Polar White #62000, Beige #72005, Pinstripe #52070, Angora #72174, Calcutta Black #52000
Standard Texture: (P-1) Hair-cell. Other colors, textures, substrates, thicknesses and panel sizes are available with certain minimum requirements.
Color matched moldings are available.

 INSTALLATION

Storage and Preparation: Panels should only be stored in a dry area. Do not store panels outdoors.
Panels should be unwrapped and removed from skid and stacked on a flat, dry surface.
Panels should be preconditioned for at least 24 hours in temperature and humidity condition of installation area(s).
Tools: Panels can be cut using power saws with carbide tip blades.
Panels may be drilled fastening with a metal drill bit. A masonry bit should be used when drilling into concrete is required.
Expansion and Contraction - KYDEX
® Prelaminated Panels will expand and contract. Allow a 1/8" gap at ceiling and base and within moldings.
Allow for expansion of panels when installing around pipes, conduits, electrical outlets, etc.
Moldings and Sealants - Use of moldings and silicone sealant with panels is recommended to achieve a moisture resistant installation. Moldings also give installation a "finished" appearance.
Caution: Failure to use moldings and sealant may cause panel deterioration. In high moisture areas or in standing water, edge swelling and moisture absorption by substrate will occur if appropriate moldings and sealant are not used. Install vapor barrier behind panel installation in high moisture areas or use panel with factory applied vapor barrier.
Proper selection of substrate is also required in high moisture areas.
Fasteners - Panels should be installed with non-corroding fasteners. Plastic pin rivets, chrome pin rivets, one piece nylon rivet, stainless nails or screws are recommended.
Adhesives - The use of adhesive when installing panels is recommended along with fasteners. Franklin #3164 FRP  Construction Adhesive or an equivalent general purpose construction adhesive is recommended. Whenever adhesive is used, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, as many adhesives are flammable and some may not be compatible with paneling. Franklin # 3432 Non-Flammable FRP Adhesive is also acceptable for use on new plasterboard (drywall or gypsum).
Adhesive should be used on studs in conjunction with fasteners when installing panels for best installation.
Note: Stud walls must be supported on opposite side of panel installation, and proper gauge studs must be used for panel selected to prevent deflection of wall system.
Adhesive failure is not panel failure.
Installation Procedures - All installation procedures to be in accordance with manufacturer's recommended method. Installation manuals are available from local distributors or by calling (800) 826-4132.
